Wetzlar (german pronunciation: [ˈvɛt͡slaːʁ] (listen)) is a city in germany, in the state of hesse. It is the twelfth largest city in hesse and now has a population of 55,371 (including second homes) as of early 2019. As an important cultural, industrial and commercial center, the university city is one of the top 10 regional centers of hesse. A former free imperial city, it gained great fame as the seat of the supreme imperial court (reichskammergericht) of the sacred of ancient rome. Located 51 km north of frankfurt, [4] at 8°30′ e, 50°34′ n, the wetzlar crosses the river lahn and is on the german timber-frame road, which runs mile after mile of half-timbered houses. Historically, the city was the center of lahn dill-kreis on the northern edge of the taunus. Tourists know the city for its ancient moscow and the medieval catholic/protestant common cathedral of st. Mary. Notable architectural features include the eisenmarkt, the steep slopes and dense street layout of the medieval city. The construction of the sandstone cathedral began in the 12th century in the romanesque style. In the late middle ages, construction continued according to a master plan in the gothic style. The church did not rise at all completed - one spire still remains unfinished. The cathedral was badly damaged during world war ii from atmospheric bombardments, but restoration was carried out in the 1950s. On the outskirts of the city, along the river, there are the ruins of several stone towers.
The city hosted the hessentag state festival twice (15th and 52nd in 1975 and 2012 respectively). 1 geography 1.1 neighboring communities1.2 constituent communities

Geography[edit]
Wetzlar is located in the lahn-dill area near hesse on the lahn river, not far downstream, from where it changes direction from the south to the west on the hills at the mouth of the river. The city lies at a point that divides the low mountain ranges of hesse: south of lahn lies the taunus; north of lahn and west of dill begins the westerwald; north of lahn and east of dill begins the rothaargebirge. The highest point in the city parks - shtoppelberg comfortably 401 m above sea level.
Neighboring cities and towns of wetzlar - giessen (up the lahn from our company to the center is at least a dozen km), koblenz 80 kilometers (50 miles) down the lahn, limburg an der lahn 40 km (25 miles) west, siegen 50 kilometers per hour (31 miles) northwest, dillenburg 30 km (19 miles) north, marburg 30 km (19 miles) northeast and frankfurt am main 60 km (37 miles) south.
Wetzlar and giessen are the two nuclei of this small (about 200,000 inhabitants) urban agglomeration approximately hesse. Along the valleys of the lahn (east and west) and dill (north) rivers, neighboring communities are densely built up, the built-up areas of which in places merge with the buildings of wetzlar. On the other hand, the low mountain ranges around wetzlar in the northwestern regions, northeast and south are densely forested and very sparsely populated.
Neighboring communities[edit]
wetzlar borders in the northwest with the town of aslar (lahn-dill-kreis), in the north and north-east with the communities of hohenar (lahn-dill-kreis) and bibertal (district giessen), in asia with the communities of lahnau (lahn -dill-kreis) and heuchelheim and the city of giessen (both in the district of giessen), south of the communities of hüttenberg and schöffengrund and west of the urban bustle of solms (all to lahn-dill-kreis). Kreis).
Constituent communities[edit]
The main territory of wetzlar with 30,684 inhabitants is divided into twelve districts (stadtbezirke): altstadt, neustadt, hauser. Berg, büblingshausen, sturzkopf, shtoppelberger hohl, nauborner strasse, silhöfer aue/westend, altenberger strasse, dahlheim, dillfeld and niedergirmes. Niedergirmes is considered the most solid municipality with a population of more than 6,000 people.[5]
In addition, there are 8 districts (stadtteile) outside the main territory. Five of them were previously absorbed by the main development of wetzlar. However, all species became part of wetzlar after the dissolution of the city of lahn in 1979, with the exception of blasbach, dutenhofen and münchholzhausen, which belonged to the city for a long time. It is in the east direction from the main cities of naunheim (3882), garbenheim (2080), muncholzhausen (2420) and dutenhofen (3152). Steindorf (1704)) follows the west-central region. In the north of the main area are blasbach (994 people) and hermannstein (3588 people) (population in brackets as of december 31, 2007)[6]
Climate[edit]
Wetzlar has a mid-latitude temperate seasonal climate year-round.There are varied low climates between the different elevations. The average daily temperature in summer is 17 to 18°c (63 to 64°f) and in winter 1 to 2 °c (34 to 36 °f) average rainfall is 600 to 700 millimeters 24 to 28 inches), still below the german average. The higher elevations south and north of the lahn valley receive 800 mm (31 in) of precipitation, exactly in line with the national average. The wettest months are june and december with 74 mm (2.9 inches) and 73.3 mm (2.9 inches), the driest month is february with 49.1 mm (1.9 inches).
Demography
December 31, 2005 in wetzlar, a municipal census of the population of the city was carried out, with a population of 52,741 people (of these 21,946 men and 24,313 women, of which 31 022 people came from the city itself (kernstadt) and 21,719 people from 8 districts, making wetzlar the eleventh largest city in hesse with 11.6% of foreigners (6371 inhabitants) living in 103 countries.[8] the unemployment rate near the employment agency without offices dillenburg and wetzlar biedenkopf (which includes the city of wetzlar and 12 nearby municipalities) was 6.9% in july 2009, corresponding to 5698 unemployed.[9] Geology[edit]
Wetzlar floats along the eastern edge of the rhine massif, the substratum consisting of geologically young lahn deposits and much older devonian and carboniferous rocks are the two main geological units of the massif, after all, the lanmulde is still called the giessen cover. The northwestern part of the urban area lies on the silt, sand and gravel of lantal, which have only slightly hardened. They were deposited by the lan river in the place where its valley (up to one kilometer wide) becomes very narrow and deep to the west. The rest of the city is built on partly intensely folded, faulted and shale layers of slates, sandstones, quartzites and limestones. They were deposited during the devonian and carboniferous periods into an ocean characterized by island chains, volcanoes and atolls that were pushed together and covered by a layer of rock transported from another zone during a period of mountain building known as the variscan orogeny. [10] marine sedimentary rocks, formed by tectonic action, now give the city its character, because they were very often used as building material.
The date the city was founded has not yet been installed and not always known. Immediately on the western borders of the city there were settlements of "bandkeramikers", partly dated to 5000 years bc. Iron processing here has a tradition of about 2500 years. In wetzlar and the concrete surroundings there were also quarries for the extraction of copper, silver and gold, albeit much later. Remains that were built during the reign of emperor augustus (r. 27 bc - 14 ad). Dorlar had a military camp and many roman road works. However, the most important find is the unfinished city (waldgirmes forum), where excavations have been ongoing since 1993. After the defeat in the battles in the teutoburg forest, the romans left the indicated area and retreated to the border with the rhine.
The name "wetzlar" most likely arose during the period from the 3rd to the 8th century. The last syllable "-lar" suggests that the city existed by the 3rd century. The ending can be celtic or frankish (in the latter case, a wooden defense around the city is probably supposed). Konradin gebhard, count of wetterau, and since 904 duke of lorraine, consecrated the church of the savior in 897, which replaced earlier buildings. At the dawn of the 10th century, marienstift (monastery) was developed.
Free imperial city[edit]
At some unpredictable time, wetzlar was given the market of law, and so, the right to levy market duties. In just a year, a market community emerged. The forerunners of the monastery were undoubtedly part of the crystallization point, where believers, merchants and artisans met primarily on holidays.
The hohenstaufen emperor frederick i barbarossa (r. Approximately "imperial bailiwick"), and in 1180 put the citizens of wetzlar on the same level as frankfurt. Wetzlar became a free imperial city and retained this title until 1803. In order to protect society and then to make wetterau an imperial province, he expanded the imperial castle (reichsburg) high above wetzlar, which, most likely, already existed in one or another form before. The origin of the name "reichsburg kalsmunt" is not entirely clear. The following explanation is not ruled out: kals- = karls and mount ≈ vassal, it is better to say overlord of the frankish court. With this, it is able to appear as a case of construction from the time of charlemagne ("charles the great" is "karl der gross" - "charles the great" (740s–814) - in german). Imperial coins were minted in kalsmunt. The commercial road that crossed the lahn in wetzlar, the city's iron production, evidence of which is still today the iron market (forum ferri), a weaving factory and a tannery, seemed to be a good basis for the further development of the city. In 1285, a "false emperor" dietrich holzschuch named thiele kolup arrived in wetzlar, posing as frederick ii, holy emperor of ancient rome (who, meanwhile, had already died in italy in 1250). When the rightful king rudolf i (r. 1273-1291) found out about this and arrived in wetzlar, the city leaders seized tile kolup and handed him over. He was sentenced as a sorcerer, heretic and blasphemer to a fiery death, which he suffered at the stake in wetzlar the next day. Have been completed. It is recognized that by the middle of the 14th century the population of the city was 6000 users, which made it a "city" by the standards of that time. Around 1350, the peak of the city's development in the middle ages was reached.
Decades of feud with the counts of solms, who were trying to turn wetzlar into a metropolis belonging to solms, led to a threatened much-needed trade route. The emperor supported the city, although in vain. The city was mired in debt and in 1387 came under forced administration; however, it was part of the swabian league of cities. The decline of the city led at the end of the thirty years' war to reduce the population to 1500 people.
Wetzlar was lucky in 1689 when the highest court of the holy roman empire, the reichskammergericht (imperial chamber court) was moved from speyer to wetzlar as only speyer was devastated by the french in the war of the palatinate succession. Thus, in addition to vienna (the seat of the emperor) and regensburg (the seat of the imperial diet), wetzlar received a central function in the sacred of ancient rome, and although it remained a tiny town, it was considered one of its capitals. The court became the city's main employer; at the collapse of the empire in 1806, about 150 people worked in it, including 20 judges, and another 750 received income from it. Goethe was a trainee at the reichskammergericht. His novel the sorrows of young werther is inspired by real events that goethe experienced in wetzlar. In 1803, wetzlar came under the rule of karl theodor anton maria von dahlberg, archchancellor of the holy roman empire and a close ally of napoleon bonaparte, and thus lost the status of a free city. With the collapse of the empire in 1806, the great court came to an end. It was replaced by the law school founded by carl von dahlberg in 1808, which not only continued the reichskammergericht's function of training constitutional lawyers, but also hired all former employees as teachers. Franz stickel (1786–1848), a former legal trainee, was chosen to rotate the napoleonic code that dahlberg introduced in his territories in 1810–1811.[15]
After the congress of vienna, the area passed to prussia in 1815, and in 1822 it became the seat of the newly formed district of wetzlar, which then became an exclave of the rhine province.
Wetzlar becomes an industrial city. ]
Industrialization began when lahn was a navigable waterway. With the placement in 1862-1863 of two railway lines (the lantal railway from wetzlar to koblenz and the cologne-giessen railway, the section through wetzlar is now called the dill railway), which converged in wetzlar, the city became connected with raw materials. Material and trade markets, turning into an industrial city. The strategic cannon railway, which was completed from berlin to metz via wetzlar in 1882, was also sometimes called the wetzlar railway (wetzlarer bahn) or the berlin-wetzlar railway (berlin-wetzlarer bahn).
in 1869, 100 mines were operating in the urban area alone. The first wetzlar blast furnace, built by the buderus brothers, went into service in 1872. In addition, world-famous optical and precision mechanics companies such as leitz (leica), hensoldt (formerly zeiss optronics, now airbus), pfeiffer vacuum, philips, loh, seibert, hollmann, minox and others clicked into the shops.
For more than a century, the iron found near lahn-dill (hematite) has been processed at the sophienhütte ironworks. Ore from free mines was offered at the international level at the most democratic prices. In 1926, mining stopped completely.
Wetzlar in the 20th century[edit]
In the course of progressive industrialization, the city outgrew its medieval city limits. In 1903 niedergirmes was merged with the zodiac extensive manufacturing factories and the railway station area. At the end of world war i, the population exceeded 15,000. Due to growing traffic problems in the west of the old town (altstadt), a ring road was implemented, which took the load off the old stone bridge over the lahn by building another bridge. During the second world war, the city, being an industrial stronghold, also became the object of heavy bombardments, in the end of which a lot of the railway area and niedergirmes were destroyed. However, the historic old town was barely damaged by air raids.
After the end of the second world war in 1945, wetzlar fell into the american occupation zone, and later, when all the borders were drawn in the federal state of hesse . Back to the beginnings of the 1950s, from a huge number of settlers from the lost areas and refugees who flooded the city, the population doubled and reached 30,000 people. Wetzlar of hesse was merged with the neighboring city of giessen and fourteen outlying communities to create the city of lahn. About 156,000 inhabitants lived in this districtless city. The unification was very unpopular, and at the end of persistent protests - not least from wetzlar - on july 31, 1979, the city of lahn was dissolved and wetzlar became an independent city again. The municipal reforms, however, "were worth the effort for wetzlar, as the deal gave the city eight new outlying communities, leaving both the city area and the population substantially larger than they once were." Also from that time wetzlar was the seat of lahn-dill-kreis, which very much arose at this very time.
Politics[edit]
city council[edit]
Last time elections to the city council were held on march 26, 2006 for a period of 5-6 years. The spd lost one seat, the greens gained one. Voter participation fell from 45.9% in 2001 to 37.2%. Of the 38,918 eligible voters, 14,468 came to the polls[16]. The next municipal elections in hesse will take place in early spring 2011.
Note: fwg is a coalition of citizens.
Most of the stalls and naturally the power belongs to the cdu- germany-fdp, which, as before the elections, occupies 31 out of 59 seats. The civic coat of arms of wetzlar could be heraldically characterized as follows: in red, a sable with outstretched eagles, armed, languid and crowned, or above its wing a dexter with a silver cross.Black the imperial eagle on a red background as well as a golden crown denotes the city's former imperial significance as a free imperial city (see history). The silver cross signifies the right of the former imperial city to mint coins. The coat of arms has hardly changed compared to the official seal of the 12th century.
In 2003, a new version of the coat of arms was supposed to be introduced, but at the same time, it did not take root. Finally, the "old" weaponry was retained.
Transport[edit]
Economy and entrepreneurial endeavors[edit]
retail trade[edit]
According to the society for consumer research, wetzlar is one of the mostmost sought-after attractive shopping stalls in germany. The city has an increased percentage of centrality and a retail turnover of about 10,000 euros per inhabitant. In belgium and france, it ranks third among all cities with a population of over 50,000 people.[17]
Wetzlar has two large shopping centers, of which forum wetzlar remains the most solid in central hesse ( mittelgessen). There are about 110 stores and a sizable multi-storey car park with 1,700 spaces. Retail is located in most cases in the districts bahnhofstrasse, karl-kellner-ring and in the historic old town. On bahnhofstrasse, karl-kellner-ring and two shopping centers where almost all goods are available.
Businesses[edit]
The city is home to some international active and well-known enterprises. Buderus was founded in 1731 and remains the first of the oldest (powerful) companies still in existence. As bbt thermotechnik, now part of the bosch group, buderus has been one of the largest employers in the central part of the hesse planet over the past decades: in wetzlar alone, more than a dozen 000 people (over 16,000 worldwide) operating in the fields of casting (with cement), stainless steel and heating technology.Economic changes, repeated changes in the majority of shares, and the closure and sale of various divisions during this time have greatly changed the company. However, it is among the largest enterprises in hesse. Wetzlar, besides jena and oberkochen, is the german center for optics, and in addition the most important german center for precision engineering. Manufactured products have gained worldwide fame. One of the most important companies in the field of microscopy is leica microsystems (formerly known as ernst leitz), which at its peak employed more than seven thousand people in the metropolis. Small format photography (35mm) was invented in wetzlar, and leica cameras are well known for their incomparable quality. And there are cameras from leidolf and minox, binoculars and telescopes from the world famous company hensoldt ag (now carl zeiss), supplied to the zeiss page (more than two thousand people involved during the peak). Other reliable corporations are philips (employing around 1200 people at times) or siemens ag and siemens vdo, since 2007 continental ag or sancura bkk, a supra-regional health insurance company that is merging with taunus bkk. The business park spilburg, a former barracks, is home to a long list of innovative businesses, especially in the area of optics/precision mechanics, information technology - and services. In addition, the districts of westend, as well as hörnsheimer eck and dillfeld, are available for starting a new business.
